HEALTH comes in strong supply at a new business at The Junction.
Newcastle Discount Vitamins has opened its doors at 179 Union St with a large range of natural, alternative products and a variety of other items on its shelves.
Also in good supply is qualified and knowledgeable staff who can advise on the prevention and treatment of a diversity of problems and conditions.
A special feature of the new business is its highly competitive pricing, with single items selling below recommended retail prices and significant discounts also available for people who buy in larger quantities.
`The idea of the shop is that it's a discount business,' said proprietor Ian Bell.
`It provides the opportunity for people who use a lot of the products to be able to stock up on them at reduced prices.
`For example we have one item whose recommended retail price is $14.20 which sells here for $11.95. People can then buy three for $33 or six for $59, which puts the price of the single item under $10.'
Mr Bell studied nutrition for two years and also worked in a similar business in Sydney before deciding to make the move to the Hunter with his chiropractor wife, Mary Bourke, formerly of Maitland, and their two small children.
As well as a big range of alternative health products such as well known brands of vitamins and herbal medicines, the new store also has a variety of other products and services.
They include a selection of health foods and a range of sports nutrition products such as energy drinks and protein powders.
`What we can do with such products is to give people the right information about them to help ensure that they are using them correctly.'
Also included in the services at the store is free naturopathic advice.
Staff member Victoria Blackall is a naturopath and also has qualifications in homeopathy, herbalism and nutrition.
The third member of the staff, Carly Kennedy, is currently studying naturopathy.
`We will be employing more staff as the volume of trade increases,' said the proprietor.
Private consultations will be available in the New Year in a consultation room, which is being set up, with a dispensary, on the premises.
The staff are also available to discuss problems with customers and to advise them about use of the products.
